North GA – Babies Can't Wait (BCW), a vital program within the Women and Children's Health Services division of the Georgia Department of Public Health, is committed to providing comprehensive early intervention services to infants and toddlers with special needs, aged from birth to three years, as well as their families. As Georgia's Part C early intervention program, BCW focuses on empowering family members and caregivers to optimize children's learning and development through everyday opportunities.
At their recent statewide summit meeting held in mid-August, themed "Reimagining & Rebuilding Early Intervention in Georgia," the Babies Can’t Wait program proudly recognized and expressed deep gratitude to the exceptional staff in health districts who have made invaluable contributions to the children and families they serve. During the summit, awards were bestowed upon numerous staff members whose outstanding work truly embodies the spirit of the theme.
Several of the awards were presented to Babies Can’t Wait staff from the North Georgia Health District.

Lois Blockley, Babies Can’t Wait Early Intervention Coordinator for the North Georgia Health District, has proven herself to be an exceptional leader, consistently going above and beyond to support her district, families, and providers. Lois's patience and unwavering support to her team have helped her colleagues grow and gain confidence in their positions. Her availability and responsiveness, often answering emails and phone calls within minutes, demonstrate her dedication to providing the support needed. With a genuine heart for the families served by her program, Lois goes the extra mile to ensure they receive the assistance they require.
Throughout the years, Lois’s strong and supportive leadership skills have remained constant. She consistently refers to policy when making decisions for the district, displaying confidence in her choices while also acknowledging and rectifying any mistakes. Lois's patience and teaching abilities shine through when training providers and new staff members, making her an invaluable mentor and Early Intervention Coordinator. Those fortunate enough to work with Lois can attest to the immense knowledge and growth they have gained under her guidance.

NORTH GEORGIA – The highly anticipated Drive-thru Flu Shot Clinics are making a comeback in North Georgia! Residents will once again have the opportunity to protect themselves against the flu with this safe, convenient, and protective option in October.
Conducted by county health departments in the North Georgia Health District, the Drive-thru Flu Shot Clinics are available for individuals aged 18 and older. Participants can remain safely in their vehicles while health department staff administer flu vaccinations.

The Ready Campaign’s 2023 National Preparedness Month theme is “Take Control in 1, 2, 3”. The campaign will focus on preparing older adults for disasters, specifically older adults from communities that are disproportionally impacted by the all-hazard events, which continue to threaten the nation.
We know older adults can face greater risks when it comes to the multitude of extreme weather events and emergencies we now face, especially if they are living alone, are low-income, have a disability, or live in rural areas.
We urge emergency managers and all those who work with and support older adult communities to access the new webpage available in English and Spanish languages at Ready.gov/older-adults and Ready.gov/es/adultos-mayores. North GA – The North Georgia Health District is pleased to announce the recent recognition and distinguished honors bestowed upon two esteemed members of our epidemiology staff.
The Rollins Epidemiology Fellowship Program, under Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health, is a two-year fellowship that places early career epidemiologists in Georgia's state and local health departments. Its mission is to enhance Georgia’s state and local public health programs by training exceptional epidemiologists who passionately serve their communities through critical surveillance, outbreak response, and general public health practice.
Ashley Deverell, Rollins Epidemiology Fellowship 2023 Outstanding Supervisor Award RecipientThe Rollins Epidemiology Fellows owe their success to the exceptional supervisors at the public health district sites. Therefore, Ashley Deverell, our district Infectious Disease Director, was recognized with the prestigious 2023 Outstanding Supervisor Award for her unwavering dedication to her fellows, department, and community. Ashley was honored for setting a remarkable example by investing time in building strong relationships with each fellow and staff member. She prioritizes their strengths and well-being, consistently going above and beyond to support her team and the communities they serve.
When fellows at the North Georgia Health District were asked to evaluate their experiences with their supervisor, Ashley surpassed expectations across all measures, earning high praise from all three fellows.
Fellow Tori Roy said, “Ashley is great at communicating. She’s very clear and offers constructive feedback and support even outside her regular business hours. She allows freedom to work on and develop projects to benefit the district and is very open to suggestions.”
